How to Get the Highest Value from Your IHG Rewards Points

A little bit ago, I opened an IHG credit card because the sign-up bonus was too good to pass up -- 200,000 points! While I've typically been loyal to Marriott and Hyatt, IHG has some standout properties that intrigued me. Fast forward to now: I'm planning a fall getaway and finally ready to put those points to good use.
Along with the 200,000 points I've earned, I also get a free night certificate (up to 40,000 points) each year as a cardholder. So, my mission? Find a five-night stay that gives me the most value from my IHG points and certificate.
Step One: Finding the Best IHG Hotel Deals with Gondola.ai
I started my search on Gondola.ai, which I now use as my go-to platform for hotel points bookings. With Gondola, I can easily filter for IHG properties and see point valuations compared to the cash rate -- making it effortless to determine if I should book with points or pay in cash.
I plugged in my travel dates and two standout properties appeared -- side-by-side beachfront resorts in Grand Cayman.
Why Book a 5-Night Stay with IHG Points?
When booking with IHG points, the fourth night is free for IHG Rewards members. Combine that with your annual free night certificate, and a five-night stay can stretch your points even further.
Since the free night certificate can't be used in the same booking as a points reservation, I simply make two reservations -- four nights with points and one night with the certificate -- and link them.
Option 1: Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa, Grand Cayman
- Cash Rate: $758/night
- Points Rate: ~70,000 points/night
- Valuation: 1.08 cents per point
- Total for 5 Nights (w/ 4th night free + free night cert): 240,000 IHG points
While the Kimpton Seafire is undeniably stunning and offers a great redemption (significantly higher than the average IHG point value of 0.68 cents per point), I only have 200,000 IHG points. That means I'd need to transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards to cover the rest -- a move that undervalues those Chase points, which are typically worth 1.5 cents each.
Option 2: Hotel Indigo Grand Cayman
- Cash Rate: $668/night
- Points Rate: ~40,000 points/night
- Valuation: 1.32 cents per point
- Total for 5 Nights (w/ 4th night free + free night cert): 160,000 IHG points
Right next door to the Kimpton is the Hotel Indigo. It may be a step down in luxury, but the value here is exceptional. Not only is the points valuation higher at 1.32 cents per point, but I have enough IHG points to book the entire stay without needing to dip into my Chase balance. Plus, it shares the same gorgeous stretch of beach.
The Verdict
While the Kimpton Seafire is arguably the flashier choice, the Hotel Indigo wins for me this time. Here's why:
- I don't have to transfer Chase points and lose value
- I'm using less points than what I got from the sign-up bonus, so there is an opportunity for a second trip
- I'm getting a redemption value that nearly doubles IHG's average point value
- Same prime beachfront location
Gondola.ai helped me quickly understand the points valuation and make this decision in under five minutes -- a huge win for someone like me who usually spirals into analysis paralysis. Having that kind of clarity upfront made the whole process feel easy and way less overwhelming.
