Booking a hotel through Capital One Travel is a third-party booking. The hotel treats it like any other online travel agency reservation, which means that in most cases you do not earn hotel loyalty points on the stay and the nights do not count toward elite status. Capital One has started labeling a small number of properties as earning hotel loyalty, but it covers a handful of hotels per market, not the portal. That trade is easy to miss because the portal pays well in Capital One's own currency. Venture X earns 10x miles on hotels booked through the portal, and the $300 annual travel credit only works inside it. So the portal looks like the obvious move right up until you notice your elite night count has not moved all year. Gondola is the other way to solve it. Gondola books direct with the hotel, so the stay earns your hotel points, your elite night credits, and your credit card points at their normal rate, and Gondola adds 3-7% back in Gondola Cash on top. It is free, and it is not a portal, so nothing about your card changes.
Gondola is a free hotel booking platform that books directly with all the major hotel chains and independents. Because the reservation is direct, stays booked through Gondola earn your hotel loyalty points, elite night credits, and elite benefits, plus your credit card points, and Gondola adds 3-7% back in Gondola Cash on top. AutoSave then monitors the rate after you book and rebooks eligible refundable reservations automatically when the price drops.
Venture X gives you $300 to spend in the portal and 10x miles on hotels. Here is what that costs in Bonvoy points and elite nights, and how to keep both.
Elite nights assume a $250 average nightly rate.
10x Venture X miles at roughly 1 cent each
$600 Gondola Cash, plus 120,000 Marriott Bonvoy points worth about $960
Assumes 10 base points per dollar valued at 0.8 cents each, and Gondola Cash at the mid-point of the published 3-7% range. Your credit card points are earned on top in both columns and are not counted here.

| What you get | Capital One Travel | Booking direct with Gondola |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel loyalty points | Usually none. A limited set of properties now carry an 'Earned hotel loyalty' label | Full earning, every eligible property, because the booking is direct |
| Elite night credits | Usually none, so portal stays do not move you toward status | Every night counts, same as booking on the hotel's own site |
| Elite benefits on arrival | At the hotel's discretion. Third-party bookings are commonly excluded | Your status is attached to the reservation, so suite upgrades and breakfast apply |
| Credit card points | 10x miles on portal hotel bookings with Venture X | Whatever your card pays on a direct hotel charge, typically 2x to 10x on a co-brand |
| Cash back | None beyond the miles | 3-7% back in Gondola Cash on the booking |
| $300 annual travel credit | Yes, this is the reason most people use the portal at all | No. Gondola cannot spend a Capital One credit for you |
| Price drop monitoring | Price prediction and a price match guarantee at booking | AutoSave watches the rate after you book and rebooks you automatically when it drops |

At a $250 average nightly rate, $12,000 is about 48 nights. Through Capital One Travel that returns $1,200 in value (10x Venture X miles at roughly 1 cent each) and no elite nights. Booking the same stays direct through Gondola returns $600 in Gondola Cash plus 120,000 Marriott Bonvoy points worth about $960, for $1,560 in total, and 48 elite nights that count toward next year's status.
Assumes 10 base points per dollar valued at 0.8 cents each, and Gondola Cash at the mid-point of the published 3-7% range. Credit card points are earned on top in both columns and are not counted.
The $300 travel credit is worth having, and the cleanest way to use it is on a single trip early in your cardmember year. Book one stay in the portal, absorb the lost points and nights on that one stay, and take the $300.
The mistake is treating the portal as your default booking tool for the other eleven months because it earns 10x. The 10x is real, but it is paid for with the hotel points and the elite nights, and if you are anywhere near a status threshold those nights are worth more than the miles.
If you have no status and are not chasing any, if you are staying somewhere with no loyalty program at all, or if the portal's cash rate is meaningfully below the direct rate, book the portal. Elite nights you will never use are worth nothing, and 10x on a cheaper rate is a good deal.
If you hold status, or you are inside striking distance of the next tier, the math flips hard. Nights are the scarce input. You cannot buy them back in December.
Capital One has begun surfacing a label on select portal properties indicating that the booking earns hotel loyalty points and elite night credits with the hotel's own program. Where you see it, the usual trade-off does not apply and the portal is a genuinely good deal.
Treat it as a per-property check rather than a policy change. Coverage has been reported as a handful of properties per market, so the default assumption for an unlabeled hotel should still be that you earn nothing with the chain.
Gondola books direct with every major chain and independents, so your hotel points, elite night credits, and card points all post the way they should. Gondola Cash adds 3-7% back on top, and AutoSave rebooks you if the rate drops after you book. It is free.
