A standard hotel booking through the Chase Travel portal is a third-party reservation, and most chains do not award loyalty points or elite night credit on it. If you book your year of hotels through the portal to burn Ultimate Rewards, you will end the year with a lot of nights that never posted anywhere. There are two real exceptions and both are worth knowing. Properties in The Edit by Chase Travel are eligible to earn points and elite nights in the hotel's own program. And for 2026, Sapphire Reserve cardmembers get up to $250 in statement credits on eligible prepaid Chase Travel hotel bookings at a named set of brands with a stay of at least two nights, where loyalty-eligible hotels still earn hotel points and benefits. Outside those two lanes, booking direct is the better default. Gondola books direct with the hotel so the stay earns your hotel points, your elite nights, and your card points, and adds 3-7% back in Gondola Cash. It is free and it does not touch your Chase account.
Gondola is a free hotel booking platform that books directly with all the major hotel chains and independents. Because the reservation is direct, stays booked through Gondola earn your hotel loyalty points, elite night credits, and elite benefits, plus your credit card points, and Gondola adds 3-7% back in Gondola Cash on top. AutoSave then monitors the rate after you book and rebooks eligible refundable reservations automatically when the price drops.
Standard Chase Travel hotel bookings usually earn no hotel points and no elite nights. The Edit is the exception. How to use the credits without losing status.
Elite nights assume a $250 average nightly rate.
Ultimate Rewards earned at the card's portal rate
$600 Gondola Cash, plus 120,000 Marriott Bonvoy points worth about $960
Assumes 10 base points per dollar valued at 0.8 cents each, and Gondola Cash at the mid-point of the published 3-7% range. Your credit card points are earned on top in both columns and are not counted here.

At a $250 average nightly rate, $12,000 is about 48 nights. Through Chase Travel that returns $600 in value (Ultimate Rewards earned at the card's portal rate) and no elite nights. Booking the same stays direct through Gondola returns $600 in Gondola Cash plus 120,000 Marriott Bonvoy points worth about $960, for $1,560 in total, and 48 elite nights that count toward next year's status.

The Edit by Chase Travel is a curated set of hotels available to Sapphire Reserve and Sapphire Reserve Business cardholders, and bookings there are eligible to earn points and elite nights with the hotel's own program on top of the property credits Chase layers on.
That makes The Edit a genuinely different product from the rest of the portal. If the hotel you want is in it, book it there. The general portal is where the loyalty earning quietly disappears.
Most people use the Chase portal to spend Ultimate Rewards at an elevated rate, not to earn. That is a fair use and Gondola does not replace it, because Gondola books cash rates and hotel award rates rather than Chase points.
The thing to avoid is using the portal for cash bookings out of habit. A cash stay booked in the portal costs you the hotel points and the elite nights and gives you nothing you could not get by booking direct.
The 2026 Sapphire Reserve benefit is up to $250 in statement credits on eligible prepaid Chase Travel hotel bookings at IHG, Montage, Pendry, Omni, Virgin, Minor, and Pan Pacific properties, on a stay of at least two nights. Stays at loyalty-eligible hotels in that set remain eligible for hotel loyalty points and benefits.
So this credit does not carry the usual portal penalty at those brands. Use it there, and keep the rest of your nights direct.
Gondola books direct with every major chain and independents, so your hotel points, elite night credits, and card points all post the way they should. Gondola Cash adds 3-7% back on top, and AutoSave rebooks you if the rate drops after you book. It is free.
